History and Motivation

The idea for the Coastal Waccamaw Stormwater Education Consortium was developed in the Spring of 2004 when Jeff Pollack of the North Inlet-Winyah Bay Coastal Training Program (CTP), Susan Libes of Coastal Carolina University's Waccamaw Watershed Academy, Cal Sawyer of Clemson University's Carolina Clear Program, and Hamp Shuping of the Waccamaw Riverkeeper Program got together to try to coordinate their stormwater and watershed education efforts.  These service providers agreed that an appropriate first step would be to convene a small group of decision makers from local MS4 communities to assess their need for watershed-related educational services and to evaluate the utility of a regional approach to stormwater education.

A summary of this initial meeting (including a list of attendees), which was held at Coastal Carolina University's Atlantic Center on June 22, can be viewed here.  The stakeholders made great strides during this session, but all involved quickly realized that a much broader range of stakeholders (representatives from environmental non-profits and other citizen groups, state agencies, and others) would need to be included in order make the Coastal Waccamaw Stormwater Education Consortium a truly regional effort.
